The moral quality of policies and legislative measures is subject to many influences such as
those of secular humanism. Although there is some common ground between Christian
principles and those of other religions and world views, there are also radical differences.
These differences have already eroded and could further erode the moral fabric of society and
victimise Christians in South Africa, if we do not use the opportunity afforded to us as the
majority in our democratic society.
The following examples illustrate this point:
babies are aborted in terms of legislation euphemistically based on the notion
of "freedom of choice";
a policy has been accepted to introduce compulsory multi-religious
education in a way which is incompatible with the Biblical Christian world view, into
our schools;
all corporal punishment has been outlawed even in private Christian schools
and legislation is envisaged to outlaw the parental power of moderate corporal
punishment of their children.
Countless babies have already been aborted and they have been denied constitutional
protection of their lives on the basis that they are not regarded as "persons", even though the
ancient Romans had already introduced legal measures to avoid such absurdities. Discipline in
our schools are suffering the consequences of the abolition of all forms of corporal punishment
and the stress on teachers is increasing. Abolition of the parental power to moderately apply
the corporal punishment sanctioned by the Bible, will cause a further escalation of juvenile
delinquency.
If the State assumes the right to teach all children, not only knowledge of other religions, but
also how to think about religions and how to make a choice in this regard, the sacred
responsibility of Christian parents to lead their children to Christ will suffer a crucial set back.
This is exactly what is envisaged in the education policy.
Christians are called upon to exercise their democratic rights to change our society and the
approach of current policy makers to reflect the true Christian values of love, Christian
education and good government.
