Draft Christian Resolution (For Comment)
Religious Education Policy |
This draft refers to the Department of Education Policy
Christians accept the Bible as the true revelation of God to humanity.
Christians cannot deny Jesus Christ as the only way to salvation and
the ultimate Prince of Peace by:
- "celebrating" the so-called "rich religious diversity" of South Africa;
- accepting that it is necessary to allow the State to enforce "impartial
and objective" religious education which is aimed at equipping learners to
think "objectively" about religions and other world views, to enable them to
make an objective personal choice between religions and world views; and
- agreeing that Christian education would lead to conflict while
multi-religious education would establish greater harmony and mutual respect.
Christianity is based on love for all people and acknowledges the right of every person to
choose for or against Christ. In its pure biblical form, it is ideal to create
peace amongst people and tolerance of people with differing religious and world views.
Christians regard religion as the highest priority and Christian parents have a supreme
responsibility to ensure education of their children which does not conflict with the Christian
world view. The possibility to provide "objective" multi-religious education in itself constitutes
a world view which is incompatible with the Christian world view and will be opposed by
Christians.
Enforcing religious education which is not Christian in nature on the children of
Christian
parents in South Africa, is bound to cause conflict between parents, children, educators,
schools and the Department of Education.
